Im Zusammenhang mit dem Betrieb von Ethanolkaminen kommt es immer wieder zu Verpuffungen und schweren Verbrennungsunfällen – auch mit Todesfolge. Häufig passiert dies, wie hier, beim Nachfüllen des Brennstoffes. Gegen Ende des Brennvorganges sind noch vorhandene, kleine Flammen oft kaum mehr sichtbar, insbesondere dann, wenn das Brennfeld mit Dekoration abgedeckt oder der Raum relativ hell beleuchtet ist.

Beim Nachfüllen des vermeintlich erloschenen Ethanolkamins kommt es an den noch warmen Oberflächen des Gerätes zum raschen Verdunsten des Brennstoffes. Die Ethanoldämpfe werden durch die noch vorhandene Flamme oder an heißen Oberflächen entzündet. Die Folgen sind eine Explosion und die Bildung einer Stichflamme, die sich bis zum Nachfüllbehälter ausbreiten kann.

2016 wurde außerdem die DIN EN 16647:2016-04: „Feuerstellen für flüssige Brennstoffe – Dekorative Geräte, die unter Verwendung eines Alkohol basierten flüssigen oder gelförmigen Brennstoffes eine Flamme erzeugen – Nutzung im privaten Haushaltbereich“ neu aufgelegt. Laut Norm müssen nun Hersteller oder Importeure von Ethanolkaminen den Geräten eine detaillierte Bedienungsanleitung mit klaren Sicherheitshinweisen beilegen. Außerdem muss der Kamin im Bereich der Einfüllöffnungen mit einem gut sichtbaren und dauerhaften Piktogramm versehen sein, das darauf hinweist, den Brennstoffbehälter nicht während des Betriebes oder im warmen Zustand nachzufüllen.

Ein solches Piktogramm gab es an dem Kamin aus dem hier geschilderten Fall nicht. Auch eine Herstellerkennzeichnung und ein Typenschild fehlten.

An der Schadenstelle fand der Gutachter zwei Kunststoffkanister, von denen einer geschmolzen war. Auf dem anderen 10-Liter-Kanister klebte ein Schild mit folgenden Warnhinweisen: „Füllen Sie niemals Bioethanol nach, solange die Flamme noch brennt oder die Brennkammer noch warm ist! (…) Von Hitze / Funken / offener Flamme / heißen Oberflächen fernhalten“.

Offensichtlich hatte die Frau diese Angaben nicht berücksichtigt. Zum Zeitpunkt der Untersuchung durch das IFS war nicht sicher, ob sie ihre schweren Brandverletzungen überleben würde.
